I was in the Mossy Ridge vacuum seal room the other day, and was helping Ashlyn bag some fish, and these salmon were coming thru and I kept thinking they were kings I double checked with the filet crew and they said no they were Silvers/Coho. They were really nice big Coho. We are seeing really good fishing from Three Hill to Yakobi. Corey and Joe were near Three Hill yesterday and reported having three on at once several times. Said it might have been the hottest fastest best fishing they have seen here. From now till we leave the Silvers will only get better and bigger. Very fun time of year to be fishing in Cross Sound.
151 lbs is the biggest so far this week for halibut, caught by Dennis & Tom. I remember the first time Dennis came fishing he told me he fishes a new lodge every year and has been fishing Alaska for over 20 years. I think he is on his 10th or more year with us. Halibut are being caught in the open ocean as well as the inside waters. Pink salmon is still what I am hearing as the preferred bait, we are seeing more octopus beaks in their stomachs though.
Last year was the first year we did not have a big big storm the first week in August. And so far it looks like we have avoided it again this year. We have a small storm today passing thru. Heavy rain with rain coming in sideways with about a 20 kt wind. Open ocean is fishable today, but not the calmest conditions. Mark and Brad started a tradition many years ago, they bring sweet corn on the cob back up in one of the fish boxes from the previous year. We eat it for staff lunch, always a treat to have fresh stuff to eat. This will be Marks 15 year fishing with us. Very grateful to all those that have helped us. I remember once Mark went out by himself and came back in about 30 mins, I asked what was wrong and he opened the cooler and said nothing, nothing at all, he had 6 very big nice Coho in the box.
