What a great stretch of weather we are experiencing!!!! Yesterday we had a few showers but still an amazing weather day. The day before it was very sunny and almost hot. Hot to us here in Elfin Cove is 80 degrees so 60 feels really good. Calm winds have been the norm for the past week or more. Very good open ocean conditions.
Salmon report is great, the only thing we are waiting for is the big schools to hit Three Hill we are still having to go down to Yakobi Rock and those areas to get good salmon fishing. Pinks are in thick, I am starting to see big schools in front of streams. We are starting to see some bigger silvers. Dipsy divers are being productive, but down riggers are still the main focus, 60’ and up for Silvers. I keep hearing different colors so it does not seem to matter at this point what color or spoon. A reminder to gut your salmon the meat will be much better if you do, and you can keep the guts for halibut fishing!
Halibut fishing still very consistent , we are seeing some nice trophy halibut on the dock. Pink salmon I think is still the preferred bait, but a nice fresh Kelp Greening is great also. Cape Spencer, Lemesurier Island were some hot spots. Check your drag and make sure your hooks are sharp.
Ling Cod are still being caught like crazy, amazes me that it is closed till Sept 1st, Lots of ling cod have fun catching them and take a great photo and let them go.
I think the highlight for me was to see Ed come in with a big halibut, he has been fishing here for many years, and finally got a big one. I think his son actually reeled it in but the smile on Eds face was all that mattered!
Mary and I made a supply run with the Yellow boat and as we were pulling in to Auke Bay we ran into some guests from last fall, they have since bought a boat and a cabin in Sitka, they said their experience in Elfin Cove changed their life, they are from Hawaii and now plan to summer in Sitka.
