255 LB HALIBUT!
July 30th Fishing Update Wet and foggy conditions continue. It has rained heavy at times and then other times just a nice mist that seems to go through the tiniest cracks in your rain gear and go right down the back of your neck. Very wet conditions. Ed from Florida brought Jim with him and on the ride into Juneau Ed asked if I had a photo of the Fairweather Mountain Range to show Jim. The next week looks very very good for wind, but I think our wet conditions are going t

277 lb Halibut!
July 25th Fishing Update Several years ago I was in the Alaska Air Cargo office sending some fish boxes and Dan Fitzgerald was with me. The lady at the counter asked, how was your fishing trip? Dan replied “ It was the best and worst trip I have ever had”. Dan really struggled that week and on the last day at 5:30pm they hooked into some big halibut and it took his worst fishing week ever to one of his best trips ever. Dan just passed on to the other side he will be misse

July 18th Fishing Update
Is it just me or is time really starting to pick up pace. July 18th already. Seems like we were celebrating the 4th of July just yesterday. Today is what I would call a perfect Alaskan day, overcast with an occasional misty rain band coming thru. Not hot at all, just a nice cool temperature. The last couple days the fishing has slowed a bit. We had a frenzy bite going on for a couple of days. Sitting in my office and I hear the best questions ever, on the radio - can a

July 14 Update
July 14th Update Sunday was our first big storm of the season. Forecast was for 25 kts and it was every bit of that, we had some pretty good rain also. We did have one boat that was crazy and went down the coast, but the majority of the fishermen stayed close to home and stayed on the inside waters. The days after the storm were much better and by the 14th it was very nice water to fish on. The guys from Seattle did very well, one day they brought in a 158 lb halibut and

July 9th Fishing Update
July 9th Update The Pink salmon hit the coast on July 7th. Big schools of pink salmon! You could see them on the surface with their fins out of the water, birds all around them. The halibut fishing is going to catch fire! This week again most of the guests were focused on halibut not salmon. We did have one boat yesterday get their limit of silvers. The dock crew are reporting pink salmon in the stomachs of the halibut now also. Lemesurier Island was the hot spot for t

July 5th
July 5th Fishing Update FOG and HEAT! In Juneau it is 10 degrees warmer than Elfin Cove. This heat in Juneau with cooler temps on the coast are creating fog starting right at South Pass. I predict this fog stays with us for the next few days. It has been burning off by 10:00 or so. We had a boat yesterday come in with 3 King Salmon so Kings are slowing down! Silvers have slowed down, we are seeing a few here and there but not as many as in June. Keep in mind though the

July 3rd Fishing Update
July 3rd Fishing Report It is a beautiful thing to behold when the open ocean lays down and is flat calm. Just been really nice and hot and calm water for the past two days, today looks to be the same and the forecast for tomorrow looks very good also. Yahoo!! The commercial troller opening started on the 1st of July, I have heard no reports yet of how they are doing. Very amazing to see them all lined out headed out to go fishing. Elfin cove was a beehive of activity and
