July 15th Fishing Update

I always get asked when is the best time to go fishing in Elfin Cove? July 13th! July 13th!! Final Answer!!

Today the Shoreline Building is headed home.  We had a big group from Utah and another group from Minnesota.  The Minnesota guys have been here many many years and the Utah group was their first time in Elfin Cove.  It made for a fun week, lots of learning and teaching.

We did not get down the coast much again this week due to sea conditions.  Heavy rain the past few days.

The big story is where are the PINK Salmon.  Normally you see jumpers all over the place.  We are just not seeing the big schools of pink salmon yet.  It’s July 15th, they are late for sure, hopefully this will change soon.

Silvers also are in low numbers so far.  We had a few come in but not anything normal.  I expect this to change this week, hopefully the big amounts of fresh water that is going into Cross Sound will get the salmon excited and they will start moving.

Halibut has been the same except for July 13th!  When I walked down the dock and saw this halibut laying in the bottom of the blue boat, I was in shock, I could not believe what I was seeing, and then I thought how did those 4 guys get that in that boat??  Octopus was the bait.  They had set up on the Sally Spot and was there about 20 minutes when it hit, they said it took over an hour to get it to the boat.  They said they brought it in thru the back of the boat, but I am still amazed they were able to land and get in the boat a 358 lb halibut!  Darin Allen and his sons from Utah!  Way to go!  They now hold the Waters Edge Lodge Record for Halibut 358 lbs!  Cape Spencer, Saddle, Red Can, Earl Cove, Dundas also had some nice halibut this week.
