Today is Waters Edge Building change out day. We started the week off getting off the Noble Eagle and watching Jerry take a nose dive off the dock and into the water. He landed in shallow water and was able to get back on the dock, after a change of clothes he was ready to go again. Then Scott went to the hospital in Juneau with an infection, and then Rob on his last fishing day twisted/sprained his ankle. Jeremy got him in a boot and he still went out fishing that day. We later learned that Jerry’s Doctor told him to not go on this trip, Jerry went anyway. I am always amazed at the determination of a fishermen. If we all had the same desire and intensity to do our daily jobs/chores like these guys had to go fishing the world would be a different looking place.
Still seeing photos of King Salmon being caught. Pink salmon are now the dominant force out there. They seem to be all over the place, I was up Althorp looking for bears and they were jumping in the mouth of the stream. And out in the open ocean they are jumping every where. Silvers/Coho are there you just have to somehow get down thru the pinks to get them.
Halibut were right on pace for normal, biggest for the week was 152 lbs, caught by Dave & Jerry, they were in the Cape Spencer area. I had two reports this week of something taking the line very fast and then breaking the line. Fresh pink salmon seem to be the preferred bait still.
Weather was pretty good this week there was a couple of days where Cross Sound was to much to go down the coast, but not much rain and good wind conditions were here most of the week.
The pinks should start going in the streams and hopefully start to decline. I would expect by end of July we are going to see some really good Silver salmon fishing, at times Three Hill, but we are still seeing most of the Silvers caught down the coast a bit Soapstone and Yakobi Rock areas. They seem to be 70’ and up usually around 30’ to 40’.
